Scope, Conditions, and Boundaries
Gutter performance on the Wasatch Front is governed by conditions that differ from national averages, and those conditions shape both the specification and the repair approach for every project we handle.
Utah freeze-thaw and snow-load factors. The Wasatch Front experiences over 150 freeze-thaw cycles per year at elevations above 4,500 feet. Snow that accumulates on the roof melts during daytime warming, refreezes at the eaves overnight, and builds ice dams that can pull gutter runs off the fascia, crush standard-gauge hangers, and force water behind the shingles and into the soffit cavity. Four Gutter Service Categories
Most residential gutter work falls into one of four categories based on the current condition of the system and the outcome the homeowner needs.
New gutter installation. This scope applies to homes that do not have gutters, homes where additions or new construction require a gutter system, and situations where the existing system is beyond repair and must be replaced from scratch. Full seamless system replacement. This is the scope when the existing system has reached the end of its service life — widespread leaking at joints, consistent sagging despite hanger replacement, outdated sectional gutters with failing connections, or a system that was undersized for the roof from the beginning. Seamless replacement removes the old system entirely, evaluates and repairs the fascia beneath it, and installs a new seamless aluminum system fabricated on-site to eliminate the joints where sectional systems fail. Guard systems and debris management. Process and Coordination
Gutter work follows a sequence that evaluates the full drainage path — from the roof edge through the discharge point — before any material is cut.
7.1 Site evaluation. We walk the perimeter and evaluate the current gutter system (or lack of one), the fascia and soffit condition behind and around the gutters, the roof geometry and pitch, the downspout locations and discharge paths, and the ground conditions and grading at the foundation. This evaluation determines whether the project is a repair, a partial replacement, or a full system installation.
7.2 System design and specification. Based on the evaluation, we determine the gutter size and profile needed for each roof section, the hanger type and spacing appropriate for the snow and ice loads, the downspout count and locations that will handle the volume, and any fascia or soffit work required before the gutter system can be installed. 7.6 Discharge and drainage verification. After installation, the full system is checked by running water through each run to verify pitch, flow rate, outlet function, joint sealing, and downspout discharge. The ground-level discharge path is evaluated to confirm water is being directed away from the foundation — not pooling, not flowing back toward the house, and not undermining adjacent hardscape.
7.7 Cleanup and walkthrough. Old materials, packaging, and fabrication waste are removed.
